Daybook, 1810-1811, 1817-1821.

The volume opens with twenty-seven pages of invoices dated from January 1810 to February 1811 for purchases made by Elisha and Levi Kirk. Such items as combs, chalk, tools, hardware, snuff boxes, spices, dishes, books, scythes, kitchen utensils, fabrics, and reams of paper were bought primarily in Philadelphia and Lancaster, Pa. and Wilmington, De. The remainder of the manuscipt is devoted to mill activities. Entries include the customer's name and method of payment received in exchange for either a quantity and type of paper or an amount of wood sawed. Wood was also sold at the mill. Many customers paid their debts with farm produce or rags, which were in turn used to make paper.

The Stoney Grove Mills were paper and lumber mills on North East Creek between East and West Nottingham Twps., Chester County, Pa. The paper mill was operated by Josiah Kirk. He was assessed for it from 1814 to 1819. For a short time after that, it was owned by Josiah's brother, Lewis. He died in 1821 and the mill was then acquired by another brother, Timothy. Family members Elisha and Levi Kirk appear to have operated a general store near the mills. From the description of Daybook, ...
